Ellen Pikula, Head of Delegation for the team wrote that “the athletes truly enjoyed themselves this week; from the donated private jets right down to the first class level of competition. That coupled with making tons of new acquaintances every time they step outside their rooms is awesome to witness.” Ellen also wrote; “Team New York has really formed a bond. They became an entirely cohesive force bonded into a single unit. Every meal was spent eating together family style sharing stories of the day. It didn’t matter who sat next to whom, as long as there were enough seats for everyone. Today, it was literally 95 degrees outside. We sent everyone into the A/C. We had three runners still to do the 1500 at three in the afternoon. All the guys wanted to stay outside and cheer on their teammates… after competing all day in the heat.”

In addition to the team of athletes competing in Nebraska, Special Olympics Athlete, Ben Beavers of Long Island and Officer Walt Sanders of Rochester Police Department were part of the Torch Run Final Leg for the 2010 National Games which began July 11, in Ames, Iowa and culminated on July 18, at Opening Ceremonies of the Games in Lincoln, Nebraska where the torch lit the cauldron, opening the Games.
