Glens Falls Draws Nearly 1,000 Athletes & Coaches to Compete in 7 Sports
Glens Falls, NY – The Special Olympics New York State Fall Games is coming to Warren and Saratoga Counties this week. The Games kick off with a signature Opening Ceremonies in Glens Falls City Park Friday evening. Nearly 1,000 athletes and coaches from throughout the state will go for the gold in 7 sports Saturday.
State Fall Games is open to the public and free to attend. Media are invited to cover the event as follows.
FRIDAY, OCT. 18
Young Athletes Experience
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Morse Athletic Complex, 267 Sherman Ave., Queensbury
Local elementary school students with and without disabilities will field trip during the school day to experience Special Olympics New York’s signature Young Athletes & Junior Athletes Programs, with assistance from the Statewide Athlete Leadership Council. Participants will include: Lake George Elementary (9 – 10 a.m.); Saratoga Springs City School District (10 – 11 a.m.); Queensbury Elementary (11 a.m. – Noon); Glens Falls City School District (Noon – 1 p.m.).
Statewide Athlete Leadership Council Graduation
12:45 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Queensbury Hotel, 88 Ridge Street, Glens Falls, NY – Warren Room
The Statewide Athlete Leadership Council, comprised of athletes from throughout the state, gives athletes a voice in the organization’s strategic planning and day-to-day operations while also providing advanced training and life-skills development. The Class of 2024 will be celebrated in a graduation ceremony hosted by President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman, Glens Fall Mayor Bill Collins and the Board of Directors.
Healthy Athletes Screenings
5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Glens Falls City Park, Maple Street
Athletes participating in the Games will receive free health screenings from volunteer medical professionals and students prior to Opening Ceremonies. Multiple health disciplines will be represented including: FUNFitness (Physical Therapy), Special Smiles (Dentistry), Fit Feet (Podiatry), Strong Minds (Emotional/Behavioral Health) and Health Promotion (General Health Education).
State Fall Games Opening Ceremonies
7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Glens Falls City Park, Maple Street
Special Olympics New York’s signature kick-off will be emceed by NYS Department of Civil Service Commissioner Timothy Hogues. Opening Ceremonies will include the parade of athletes, remarks by President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman, Glens Falls Mayor Bill Collins and athlete representatives as well as the traditional Law Enforcement Torch Run and lighting of the cauldron.

Fitness Performance Stations
Saturday, Oct. 19, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Morse Athletic Complex, Upper Sherman Ave
Athletes will visit Performance Stations during competitions to learn about how fitness can improve their sport’s performance. The stations will be staffed by local sponsors and healthcare volunteers, and focus on physical activity/stretching, nutrition, hydration, and goal setting/positive mindset.
