SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEW YORK TO HOST “MEDFEST” AT UPSTATE
Free Sports Physicals, Medical Consent Form Renewals to Be Offered for Athletes
Syracuse, NY – Special Olympics New York athletes in the Central Region are encouraged to attend this weekend’s MedFest at Upstate Medical University. During the event, athletes will receive a free sports physical from a certified clinician and complete or renew the Medical and Consent Forms required for participation in Special Olympics.
In the interest of time, athletes are also encouraged to bring completed Medical and Consent Forms to the event. Forms can be downloaded and printed at this link.
Matthew Grier, MD, assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Upstate and a volunteer clinical director for Special Olympics New York, will lead the screening. He recruited colleagues from across the medical center to volunteer their services for the event.
MedFest will take place as follows:
- Date: Saturday, August 10th
- Location: Upstate Institute for Human Performance, 505 Irving Avenue, Syracuse, NY
- Time: 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
“Once an athlete has had their annual checkup with their physician, it can be difficult or costly to schedule a second appointment,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “MedFest creates an additional opportunity for Special Olympics New York athletes to receive a sports physical free of charge, and to renew their Medical and Consent Forms with us, so that they are ready to compete on game day. We are so grateful to Dr. Grier and his colleagues at Upstate for making MedFest possible.”
“At its core, physiatry is about maximizing a person’s function and improving their immediate quality of life in the presence of whatever impairments they are living with,” said Dr. Grier. “Special Olympics seems to have a very similar objective in mind. Working collectively seems natural and we are truly excited about the opportunity.”
