Virtual Health & Wellness Forum – Mental Health Promotion and Wellness for Individuals with IDD

• The prevalence of common mental health conditions occurring in individuals with IDD
• Strategies for fortify mental wellness
• When to consider seeking additional support and intervention

Speaker Bio: Dr. Holly Brown is the Executive Director of the Golisano Institute for Developmental Disability Nursing and Associate Professor at the Wegmans School of Nursing, St. John Fisher University. Her work is focused on building the nursing workforce’s knowledge, competencies and skills in the care of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dr. Brown is the primary investigator on a variety of grant funded projects including in 2019, Special Olympics International’s Inclusive Health Innovation program where she and her team developed an Inclusive Health Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Residency curriculum. In addition to her academic and administrative responsibilities, she maintains an active clinical practice as the Senior Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at Hillside in Rochester, NY caring for youth and young adults diagnosed with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities and co-occurring psychiatric conditions in residential and community-based settings. Dr. Brown is also a Health Promotion Clinical Director for Special Olympics New York.

The Special Olympics New York Virtual Health & Wellness Forums are a space for individuals with ID, families, caregivers and coaches to engage with health-focused individuals/organizations such as Healthcare Providers and Fitness Specialists. The Forums provide information and resources related to the health of Special Olympics athletes, while also focusing on bettering access to health care, education and inclusive activities for people with intellectual disabilities.  Often, the health struggles that those with ID face are directly related to the lack of education and resources available to the population and their caregivers.  We aim to cover topical issues that our community wishes to learn more about, and in turn positively impact the health of people with ID across the State. 

Forums are presentation based with the opportunity to submit questions to the speaker.  Participants are asked to register with the Zoom links below.  Recordings will be available to view on our website after the live presentation is complete!
