New York City Region Unified Pair Azizbek Rasabov and Joseph A. Bernardo IV Named Special Olympics New York Athletes of the Month for April

New York City, NY – Special Olympics New York and the New York Achieving a Better Life Experience Program (NY ABLE) are pleased to congratulate Unified pair Azizbek Rasabov and Joseph A. Bernardo IV on being named the April 2024 Athletes of the Month.

Rasabov, age 13, always beams with excitement, whether he’s practicing or competing in Unified bocce. He accepts every opportunity to include others in conversation and activity, and his willingness to embrace challenges with resilience and optimism reflects his empathetic spirit.

Bernardo, age 12, has a natural ability to foster inclusivity and acceptance within the team environment. Through his actions and words, he embodies unity and respect, making him a shining example of inclusion in action.

“Athletes and partners like Joseph and Azizbek are changing the game for athletes all over our state,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “Their commitment to inclusion in school and beyond is helping to shape better communities now and in the future.”

To earn eligibility for Athlete of the Month, athletes must exhibit leadership in one or more of the following: Achievement in Sport, Sportsmanship (respect for coaches, officials, opponents, teammates), Character (playing by the rules, honesty, integrity), and Commitment to Improvement and Perseverance.
