SEFCU Announces Donation to Special Olympics New York for Every Medal Won By USA Olympic Team in Tokyo

Albany, NY – Olympics fans in the Capital Region just got another reason to root for Team USA. Every medal earned will help support Special Olympics New York athletes and coaches who are preparing for national competition in 2022.

SEFCU President & CEO Michael Castellana today announced that the credit union would donate $500 for every gold, $250 for every silver and $125 for every bronze medal won by the USA Olympics Team in Tokyo to Special Olympics New York’s own USA Games delegation.

Fans are invited to support the SEFCU campaign by making a donation at sefcu.com/olympics.

“From Carl Lewis and Kerri Strug to Michael Phelps, and, of course, the ‘Dream Team,’ it is always extraordinary to see American athletes succeed on the Olympic stage. This year, we’re pleased to make Team USA’s success even sweeter by helping the talented athletes of Special Olympics New York chase their own Olympic dreams,” said Castellana, who also pledged to personally contribute $100, $50 and $25 for medals earned in Tokyo, respectively. “As American athletes go for gold this year, we will be supporting Special Olympics New York, an organization that has already set the gold standard for empowering people with intellectual disabilities. If you needed another reason to root for Team USA in Tokyo, this is it!”

“Having the opportunity to compete at USA Games is a dream come true for our athletes,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “We are proud to be bringing one of the country’s largest delegations to USA Games in June, and that’s something we could not do without supporters like SEFCU and Michael Castellana. We are so grateful for this generous, innovative and exciting donation drive from SEFCU. Go Team USA!”

The Special Olympics USA Games will be held June 5-12, 2022 at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Team New York will include approximately 150 athletes and coaches in 14 sports: Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Equestrian, Golf, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Triathlon, Track & Field and Volleyball. They will go up against more than 5,500 athletes from across the country and the Caribbean.
