Meet Tommy Mooney – An Athlete Profile
Tommy Mooney embarked on his journey with Special Olympics NY at the age of 9 and has been actively involved in various sports for nearly 30 years. His athletic repertoire includes tennis, softball, soccer, swimming, bowling, and powerlifting. Check out Tommy’s latest video of his Special Olympics journey here.
In 2019, Tommy recognized the need to lose weight, improve his health, and train rigorously to compete at the highest level. He successfully shed 70 pounds and now excels in powerlifting, performing at the top tier in squatting, deadlifting, and bench pressing.
Tommy said, “Powerlifting is my favorite sport. Powerlifting changed my life because it made me healthy and strong.”
Over the years, Tommy has competed in competitions at local, regional, and state levels, and he even made his way to the Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey in 2014. His dream really came true when he competed at the Special Olympics USA Games in 2022 in Orlando, Florida. His remarkable story gained local media attention and was featured nationally after he achieved a multi-gold medal finish at the powerlifting event.
As a Special Olympics athlete leader and mentor for Special Olympics NY Tommy loves to speak about his journey in Special Olympics.
Tommy has volunteered for numerous fundraising and public relations initiatives. He has graced the runway as a model during the Special Olympics NY Runway for Gold fundraiser and actively aids with local events for the Law Enforcement Torch Run(LETR). He promotes Special Olympics NY through appearances in local TV commercials, print articles, and is even a featured athlete in Special Olympics NY video, which aims to recruit volunteers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he joined the “10-a-day till it’s OK” social media campaign started by LETR and posted daily workout videos on Facebook to inspire fellow athletes to still be active.
